A Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate proves that your vehicle's emissions are within the limits set by the government. It is mandatory for all motor vehicles in India and must be carried while driving.

What Is a PUC Certificate?

The PUC certificate is issued after testing the vehicle's exhaust emissions at an authorised PUC centre. The certificate contains:

  • Vehicle registration number
  • Date of test and expiry date
  • Emission readings
  • PUC centre details and certificate number

Validity Period

Vehicle TypeFirst PUC ValidityRenewal Validity
New petrol/CNG/LPG car1 year from registration6 months
New diesel car1 year from registration6 months
Two-wheeler1 year from registration6 months

How to Get a PUC Certificate

  1. Locate an authorised PUC centre near you (petrol pumps, RTO-authorised workshops).
  2. Drive in and ask for an emission test.
  3. The technician inserts a probe into the exhaust and records readings.
  4. If readings are within limits, the PUC certificate is issued instantly.
  5. Pay the fee (usually ₹60-₹100 depending on vehicle type and state).

How to Check PUC Status Online

You can verify whether your vehicle has a valid PUC through the VAHAN portal:

  1. Visit vahan.parivahan.gov.in.
  2. Click Know Your Vehicle Details.
  3. Enter the vehicle number and captcha.
  4. View the PUC validity status along with RC and insurance details.

Penalty for Not Having a Valid PUC

Driving without a valid PUC certificate can attract a fine of up to ₹10,000 under the Motor Vehicles Act. Some states also impound the vehicle or cancel the registration in repeated cases.

Tips to Pass the PUC Test

  • Service your vehicle regularly and clean or replace the air filter.
  • Use the recommended fuel grade and engine oil.
  • Check the exhaust system for leaks or damage.
  • Warm up the engine before the test for accurate readings.

Remember

A valid PUC is as important as insurance and RC. Keep it renewed before expiry to avoid fines and to reduce your vehicle's environmental impact.
